Kris Tompkins, former CEO of the Patagonia outdoor gear and apparel company, created Conservacion Patagonica in an effort to protect the wild lands and ecosystems of southern Chile and Argentina. Since then the nonprofit organization has worked diligently to raise awareness of the hazards that threaten this beautiful, remote stretch of southern Chile and Argentina. Will the help of partnered businesses and organizations, Conservacion Patagonica is now building National Parks throughout Patagonia. They are currently in the process of building Patagonia National Park in southern Chile.
Like the founders of Conservacion Patagonica, we love Patagonia. It truly is one of the wildest places left on earth. However, the pure, untainted beauty of this remarkable frontier has been threatened as outside industries seek to exploit the region’s precious natural resources for short-term monetary gain. An international energy conglomerate has proposed the construction of five mega-hydroelectric dams along Chile’s mighty Baker and Pascua Rivers. These dams would not only change the course of these feral rivers but also destroy fragile habitats in the process. Not to mention, this would open the door to the damming of other rivers in the area since constructing the transmission line is the largest expense of the project.
